European Heritage Days in Serbia European Heritage Days in Serbia

Every year in September in Serbia, as well the 48 other countries of Europe, the European Heritage Days are held. Many institutions of cultural heritage during the year are not available to tourists, but open their doors during these special days. The oldest traces of human civilization of Europe are located along the Danube near Belgrade. On this river, which was for centuries the border where, since Celtic and Roman times through the Byzantine era, to the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian empire, a number of people from all over Europe came in order to build their fortresses and guard the borders of Christian Europe.

Every year European Heritage Days has its own theme with the aim to present a common heritage as the heritage of European nations, the diversity of cultures, traditions, and customs. The theme for 2009 is “Heritage as an incentive for intercultural dialogue”

The European Heritage Days are a sort of celebration of culture and tourism. City buildings, houses under the protection, museums and other cultural institutions are open to visitors. Serbia has an impressive number of fortresses and castles that were built since prehistoric times up to the eighteenth century. Petrovaradin fortress is the best preserved fortress, known as the place where the world music festival EXIT is held, and has one of the most luxurious hotels, not only in Novi Sad and Vojvodina, but in Serbia. Cities such as Belgrade, Smederevo, Golubac, Bac and many others, besides their fortresses and during the European Heritage Days, offer rich programs of their rich multi-ethnic and intercultural heritage.

The central event will be held in the museum in the town of Prijepolje located near the border with Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina, where under one roof will be presented five major exhibitions that represent the common heritage of these multi-ethnic territories where civilizations for centuries lived together as indeed in the whole of the Balkan peninsula. During these days in Prijepolj, the “Prijepoljska Povelja“ will be signed through which three countries will express the common will to protect and promote cultural diversity, and an inter-religious and intercultural dialogue.

The event “European Heritage Days,” is a joint program of the European Commission and the Council of Europe, aimed at the public in all European countries to make cultural heritage more accessible and closer, and to highlight the diversity, yet unity of a common European heritage as one of the specific factors of European identity.
