2013 – The year of Culture in Serbia

Year 2013th, Serbia starting with new tourism advantages: celebration of 17 centuries of Edict of Milan, cultural routs, a lot of good entertainment and delicious food. Serbia has rich and authentic cultural heritage. Natural treasures, architectonic diversity, monuments keeping secrets of the past, are all the part of tourism attractiveness of our country.

Cultural offer of Serbia is valuable and special, it does not speaking just about our history, yet about modern culture. Because of that, activities of tourism employees (and initiators – National Tourism Organization of Serbia) this year are directed to promotional campaign “Cultural treasure of Serbia”. The campaign objective is to encourage the tourism industry to explore the cultural - historical heritage of Serbia and to develop tours which will be interesting and attractive, and to speak about people as the most valuable part of any country. 

Through the campaign will be represented the main attractions of our country: 

Monasteries, which Serbia has around two hundred, are peculiarity of our cultural history, and significant number of those are declared for cultural monuments, and several of them are on the list of UNESCO. Often surrounded by woods and sometimes less accessible, sometimes in a small space they have quite a few, with architectural features, manuscripts, frescoes, icons, they tell their story and attract attention. 

Art galleries speak about the most important artists and art works which have left traces in a culture of the cities in which they are located. 

Classic music, or the most significant festivals in relation with this type of music. It is about the most famous, most visited and great festivals and some of them are dedicated to our greatest artists and other are promoting the distinctiveness of classic music. 

Fortresses in Serbia was built as strategically important places by rivers, next to the main roads and on the defensive line positions. The defense of these forts, in period of Roman and Ottoman empires, was a matter of survival. In Serbia, there are about 40 fortresses or the remains of the former ones. 

Roman heritage (archeological sites), show the richness of the Roman heritage in the territory of Serbia and underline the fact that in this country was born or lived 17 Roman emperors. All places (from Sremska Mitrovica to Lebane) talk about the importance of heritage conservation, sustainable development opportunities and prosperity of local communities along the way. 

Prehistory of the territory of Serbia tells the story about the oldest traces of human existence and takes us back to the period of 40,000 years ago. The first people who lived on the soil of Serbia, for their habitat choose caves on the slopes of the lower hills that enclose the lower river valleys.
